Denis Kearney, the Irish-born labor agitator who led the Workingmen's Party of California, appears here in a bust-length portrait dated to about 1878, the year his movement reached its height. Kearney was a drayman turned orator who rallied San Francisco's unemployed and anti-Chinese workers with fiery speeches delivered on sandlots, and his followers pushed for restrictions on immigration and for an eight-hour workday. The photograph captures the stern, direct look of a man whose rhetoric helped shape California's politics for years afterward.
