Prudence Crandall is shown here in a close bust portrait, reproduced as a halftone around 1897, several years after her death in 1890. She is remembered for a single bold act in Canterbury, Connecticut, where in 1833 she opened a boarding school for young Black women. Local hostility and a state law passed that same year forced the school to close within a year, and her case became an early landmark in the struggle over access to education. Halftone was the standard method for printing photographs in books and periodicals at the time, so this image likely circulated in that kind of publication.
