This bust portrait shows James K. Vardaman, the Mississippi politician who served as governor from 1904 to 1908 and later as a U.S. senator from 1913 to 1919. Vardaman built his public career on open opposition to Black political participation, and he campaigned for office on white supremacist themes that shaped Mississippi politics in the early twentieth century. The Library's record dates the photograph to about 1905 and credits the copyright to N.C. Wingo, but the date and attribution come from an old caption card and have not been verified, so they are best treated as provisional.
