James Rudolph Garfield (1865-1950) was the second son of President James A. Garfield, and this c1904 portrait shows him in bust length, turned to the left. By the time it was made, he had built a career in Ohio law and reform politics, serving on the Cleveland Board of Education and later as a Cleveland city official. The portrait belongs to a long tradition of formal studio likenesses of public men from the turn of the twentieth century, when a carefully posed head-and-shoulders image was a standard way to present a politician or professional to the public.
