This bust portrait shows James Whitcomb Riley, the Indiana poet, turned to the left in a studio pose. Riley was among the most widely read American poets of the late 1800s, known for dialect verse such as "Little Orphant Annie" and "The Old Swimmin'-Hole," and he also toured giving public recitals of his work. The photograph's copyright notice credits Pach, a New York studio that made many portraits of public figures in this period. The date, c1898, comes from an older caption card and has not been independently verified.
