A bust-length portrait of José Batlle y Ordóñez, turned to the left, shows one of the most influential figures in Uruguay's modern history. Batlle served as president from 1903 to 1907 and again from 1911 to 1915, pushing for expanded social welfare, state-run enterprises, and a plural executive in place of a single president. The caption card gives no date, but the glass negative comes from George Grantham Bain's news photography collection, which was active in the early 1900s and 1910s, the period of Batlle's second term.
