A three-quarter view of Senator J.H. Gallinger, turned to his left, sets this portrait apart from the many formal studies of officials from this period. Jacob Harold Gallinger was a physician from Concord, New Hampshire, who entered the U.S. Senate as a Republican in 1891 and served there until his death in 1918. The photograph is dated about 1905, roughly midway through his Senate career, when he was known for his interest in public health and medical legislation. The copyright notice credits C.V. Buck, and the date and attribution come from an old caption card, so they should be read as provisional.
