Jacob Epstein, the Americans-born British sculptor, is shown here in a bust-length portrait turned to the left, a pose that lets the strong lines of his face and brow carry the frame. Epstein (1880-1959) was a New York-born artist who settled in London in 1905 and became one of the most controversial figures in British sculpture, known for modeling portrait busts and monumental figures in a rough, direct style that drew both praise and outrage. The photograph dates from around 1934, a period when his public reputation was firmly established and his work was being debated across the arts community.
