This bust portrait shows Louis E. McComas, a Republican from Maryland who was serving in the U.S. House of Representatives around the time this halftone was made, in about 1904. He was turned slightly to the left, a common pose for formal portraits of the period. The picture is a photomechanical halftone, a process that broke a photograph into tiny dots so it could be printed in newspapers and magazines. Such reproductions spread the faces of officeholders to readers who would never see them in person, so this print reflects how political figures were presented to the public in the early 1900s.
