José Rizal, the Filipino writer, physician and nationalist, is shown here in a bust portrait turned to the left, a pose that photographers of the period often used to balance a sitter's features against the plain studio backdrop. The caption card records no date, so the exact year of the sitting is unknown, but Rizal's life (1861 to 1896) places the portrait within the last decades of Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines. His novels, particularly "Noli Me Tángere" (1887) and "El filibusterismo" (1891), became central texts for reformist and independence movements, and Rizal was executed by Spanish authorities in Manila in December 1896.
