Shown in a bust-length view turned toward the left, this print depicts Jacinto Benavente, the Spanish playwright whose name the caption spells "Benevento." Benavente wrote dozens of plays, many of them comedies that held up the manners of Madrid's middle and upper classes to gentle ridicule, and he was among the most performed dramatists of his era. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1922. The caption card records no date, so the year the portrait was made is unknown.
