Simon Kenton (1755-1836) was a frontiersman whose life spanned the settlement of Kentucky and the Ohio country, and this lithograph shows him in a bust portrait turned to the left. The caption card gives no date, so the print's exact making is uncertain, though portraits of Kenton circulated in the nineteenth century as his reputation as a scout, Indian fighter and early settler grew. Kenton was captured and survived several close calls on the frontier, and his name became attached to the westward expansion that shaped the region. The lithograph is a useful reminder of how frontier figures were remembered in print.
