Adoniram Judson, the Congregationalist minister who became the first American Baptist foreign missionary, is shown here in a bust-length engraving that frames him from the shoulders up. Judson sailed for Burma in 1812 and spent decades there translating the Bible into Burmese, work that made him one of the best-known American missionaries of the nineteenth century. Because the caption card gives no date, this engraving likely dates from his lifetime or shortly after his death in 1850, when printed likenesses of religious figures circulated widely in books and periodicals.
