Stephen Hopkins (1707-1785) was a Rhode Island colonial leader who served as governor of the colony several times and later signed the Declaration of Independence for the state. This bust-length lithograph shows him in the formal dress of the eighteenth century, the kind of likeness that circulated widely after his death as Americans began to honor the men of the Revolutionary era. The caption card gives no date for the print, so it was most likely made in the nineteenth century, when interest in the founders was rising and portrait prints were a common way to commemorate them.
