This is a bust portrait of Stephen Dudley Field (1846-1913), shown in profile facing left in a print dated about 1893. Field was an American inventor and electrical engineer who worked on electric railways and related apparatus during the decades when electricity was moving from laboratory curiosity to urban infrastructure. The early 1890s were a busy period for that work, as cities were installing electric streetcars and lighting systems in place of horse-drawn and gas-powered alternatives. The photograph preserves the appearance of an inventor at the height of that transition.
