Charles Dudley Warner, the American essayist and editor, appears here in a bust-length portrait turned to his left, a common pose for formal studio work of the late 1890s. Warner was best known as co-author with Mark Twain of *The Gilded Age* (1873) and as longtime editor of *Harper's Magazine*'s "Editor's Study" column. The record dates the photograph to about 1897, when Warner was in his late sixties and a prominent figure in American literary circles. The caption card information in the record is unverified, so the exact studio and circumstances are unknown.
