Abigail Smith Adams, wife of John Adams and mother of John Quincy Adams, is the sitter in this engraved bust portrait, shown in profile facing left. Her letters to her husband, many of them written while he was away on public business during the Revolution and the early republic, offer a candid view of wartime household life and of politics in the new nation. Because the caption card records no date, the engraving is best understood as a later rendering of her likeness, made in the style common to portrait prints of the period, rather than a record taken from life.
