Thomas Edward Watson appears here in a bust portrait dated to about 1920, near the end of a career that took him from the Georgia farm country to the national stage. A Georgia Populist, he ran as the party's vice presidential candidate in 1896 alongside William Jennings Bryan and later sought the presidency himself. He won a seat in the U.S. Senate in 1920 and was serving in that role when he died in 1922. The photograph captures him in the years when he was widely known as a fierce, often combative, voice for rural and agrarian interests.
