A bust portrait of Charles Curtis, who served as vice president under Herbert Hoover from 1929 to 1933, this print was made around 1931 by Strauss Peyton, a Kansas City, Missouri, studio, and registered for copyright. Curtis, a Kansas Republican, had earlier served in the House and Senate, and he was of partly Kaw (Kansa) ancestry, which made him the first Native American to hold the vice presidency. The photograph shows him during the Depression years, when his office was far less prominent than the presidency he stood beside.
