Lev Kamenev appears in this head-and-shoulders portrait from 1922, a year when he held a senior place in the Bolshevik leadership. A longtime associate of Lenin, he chaired the Moscow Soviet, sat on the Politburo, and helped direct government work during Lenin's illness. He was later expelled from the party, tried in the 1936 show trials, and executed, which gives images from his earlier career a sober retrospective weight.
