William Brimage Bate was a Tennessee lawyer, Confederate general, and later United States senator, and this bust portrait shows him in his later years, after the Civil War had ended his military career and reshaped Southern public life. The photograph is dated only to the 1900s (the record gives c190- for the decade), so it likely reflects the Gilded Age and early twentieth-century custom of formal studio portraits for statesmen and veterans. Bate served in the Senate from 1887 until his death in 1905, a period when former Confederates were returning to national office and when memory of the war was being shaped in veterans' organizations and public monuments.
