Leo XIII, pope from 1878 until his death in 1903, is shown here in a bust portrait dated around 1902, near the end of a reign that lasted more than a quarter century. The image is a photographic print, and the record credits the Kern Brothers studio with its copyright, a reminder that commercial portrait studios produced and sold pictures of prominent churchmen to a wide public in this period. Leo was known for his encyclical on labor, Rerum Novarum, and for his scholarly interests, including the opening of the Vatican Secret Archives to researchers in 1881. The catalog data for this print comes from an older caption card and has not been verified, so the date should be read as approximate.
