David Starr Jordan appears here in profile, shown from the chest up, in a photograph dated to about 1918. Jordan was an American ichthyologist who became the first president of Stanford University when it opened in 1891, and he led the school for two decades. He was also a prominent voice in the peace movement, and he served as president of the World Peace Foundation, which gave the portrait a particular weight in the years around the First World War. The profile view, a format often used for formal portraits of scholars and public figures, emphasizes the lines of his face and beard.
