Alfred Binet, shown here in a bust portrait turned to the left, is the psychologist whose work in Paris gave the modern intelligence test its foundation. Working with Théodore Simon, he developed the Binet-Simon scale in 1905 to identify schoolchildren who needed extra help, a practical goal that shaped how educators and psychologists measured mental ability for decades afterward. This halftone print reproduces the photographic likeness of the man, and its reproduction process reflects the period when newspapers and journals first used such printing to carry portraits of public figures. The caption card records no date, so the image's exact origin is unknown.
