Shown in left profile from the shoulders up, this print depicts Michel Guillaume St. Jean de Crèvecoeur, the French-born writer who spent much of his life in North America. He wrote under the name J. Hector St. John, and his *Letters from an American Farmer*, published in London in 1782, gave European readers a picture of rural colonial life on the eve of the Revolution. The caption card gives no date for this impression, but the portrait is a useful reminder of a man whose career moved between farming in New York, diplomatic service there, and a return to France.
