Admiral William T. Sampson is the subject here, shown in a bust-length portrait turned to his left, a pose that was common in formal studio work of the era. Sampson rose to fame as commander of the U.S. Navy's North Atlantic Squadron during the Spanish-American War in 1898, when his fleet took part in the blockade and the destruction of Admiral Cervera's Spanish squadron off Santiago de Cuba. The print is dated around 1900 and carries a copyright notice in the name of Chickering, a photographic studio, so it likely circulated as a commercial portrait of a celebrated officer. The date and studio credit come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
