William Whipple (1730-1785) was a New Hampshire merchant who signed the Declaration of Independence as a delegate from that colony, and this print shows him in bust profile, turned to the side in the manner of many engraved portraits of the late eighteenth century. Profile likenesses of this kind were often copied from painted originals or drawn from life and then reproduced in quantity, so they circulated widely among readers who wanted to recognize the men behind the Revolution. The caption card gives no date, so the print's exact production period is uncertain, but its subject places it in the decades after 1776, when Whipple's name was becoming part of the national founding story.
