This profile portrait shows Hilaire Belloc, the French-born writer who became one of the best-known English-language essayists and Catholic apologists of the early twentieth century. Belloc wrote history, verse, travel books, and political commentary, and he was a close friend and collaborator of G. K. Chesterton. The caption card gives no date, so the sitting cannot be placed precisely. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs made in New York mostly in the early twentieth century, which suggests it was taken for newspaper use during Belloc's years of public prominence.
