Thomas Hobbes, the English philosopher who wrote "Leviathan" in 1651, is the subject here, shown in a half-length view seated at a desk. The record gives no date for the portrait, so its making can't be pinned down from the caption alone. Hobbes lived from 1588 to 1679 and spent much of his career in the circle of the English aristocracy, producing works on politics, geometry and human nature. Portraits of thinkers like him were often reproduced as engravings for books and collections, so this image may belong to that tradition of printed likenesses.
