Pope Pius VII, born Luigi Barnaba Chiaramonti in 1742, is shown here seated and framed from the waist up, a format often used for official portraits of church leaders. The record dates the print to 1805, a year when his reign was already marked by delicate relations with Napoleon, who had arranged for the pope to travel to Paris that winter to crown him emperor. Pius VII was elected in 1800 after the long turmoil of the French Revolution, and his image circulated widely in Europe as a symbol of papal authority during that unsettled period.
