Richard Morris Hunt, the architect who did more than anyone to bring the Beaux-Arts style to American cities, sits at his desk in this half-length portrait, likely made around 1894. Hunt designed the Biltmore estate in Asheville, North Carolina, the Newport mansions of the Gilded Age, and the pedestal for the Statue of Liberty, and he trained a generation of American architects at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. The portrait captures him at the height of that career, when his commissions defined how wealthy Americans built their homes and public buildings.
