Lillian Russell is shown in right profile in this portrait, made for the stage piece *The Princess Nicotine*. Russell (1861–1922) was one of the most celebrated American musical comedy and light opera performers of the 1880s and 1890s, and her fame made her a frequent subject for studio portraits. This print, dated to about 1893 and credited to the New York studio of Schloss, shows how such photographs served as publicity, carrying an actress's image to audiences who had never seen her perform.
