Shown in right profile and cropped close to the head and shoulders, this 1806 engraving records John Roger Fenwick (1773-1842) as a young man in Washington, D.C. The profile was made in the style of Charles Balthazar Julien Févret de Saint-Mémin, the French émigré who worked in America around the turn of the nineteenth century. He used a mechanical device, the physionotrace, to trace a sitter's outline, then reduced and engraved it as a small, precise likeness. Such profiles were popular with families and visitors who wanted an affordable portrait, and they reflect the Neoclassical taste for clean outline and restrained detail. Ellen G. Miles's 1994 study catalogues this print as number 317.
