Little Wound, an Oglala Lakota leader, is shown here seated among other men in feathered headdresses, a setting that marks the picture as a record of political council rather than an informal portrait. By the late 1890s, Lakota leaders were negotiating with federal officials over reservation land, rations and the consequences of the 1889 agreement that split the Great Sioux Reservation. Photographs like this one were often made during or after such meetings, when delegates traveled to Washington or met government commissioners on reservations. The studio credit "Photo by Heyn" and the 1899 copyright registration tie the image to the commercial photography trade of the period, which circulated such portraits widely to the public.
