Hoowanneka, also recorded as Little Elk, is named here as a chief of the Winnebago, the people now known as the Ho-Chunk. The lithograph appeared in volume II of McKenny and Hall's *History of the Indian Tribes of North America*, a multivolume work published in the 1830s and 1840s that paired portrait images with short biographical notes. Many of its sitters were Native visitors to Washington, and their likenesses were usually painted from life and then reproduced as prints. The record gives no date for the original sitting, so when it was made cannot be stated with certainty.
