Granville Sharp, the English abolitionist and philanthropist (1735–1813), is the sitter here, shown at the age of 58 in this engraving. The portrait was drawn by George Dance and engraved by Henry Meyer, and this impression was issued in May 1820, seven years after Sharp's death. Sharp is remembered for his legal challenges to slavery in England, including his role in the 1772 Somerset case, and his portrait circulated widely in the years after he died as a tribute to his work against the slave trade.
