Snake priests, as the title names them, are the focus of this c1900 photoprint, which shows the men who led the Snake Dance, a rite in which dancers carried live rattlesnakes in their mouths as part of a prayer for rain. The dance is best known from the Hopi villages on the mesas of northeastern Arizona, so the caption card's New Mexico, San Juan label should be read cautiously, since the record itself is unverified. Adam Clark Vroman, a Pasadena photographer, made many studies of Southwestern Pueblo and Hopi life around the turn of the century, and outside cameras at sacred ceremonies were often a source of tension for the communities involved.
