The dancers are the focus of this stereograph, which its caption identifies as a scalp dance performed by the Snake River Indians. The card dates to about 1902 and carries a copyright line for C.H. Graves and the Universal Photo Art Co., commercial publishers whose stereo views were sold for viewing in parlor stereoscopes. By that period, dances like this were often staged for visiting photographers and tourists rather than performed only as traditional ceremonies, so the picture reflects the market for images of Native people as much as the dance itself. The caption data is old and unverified, so the exact occasion and participants should be treated with caution.
