This wood engraving ran in the *Illustrated London News* on January 3, 1891, across two pages, at the height of public attention to the Ghost Dance among the Lakota Sioux. The dance grew out of a religious movement that spread from Nevada in 1889 and promised the return of the dead, the renewal of the land, and the removal of white settlers. Its spread alarmed federal agents and settlers, and the crisis ended in late December 1890 with the killing of Lakota people at Wounded Knee Creek. Like many illustrations of the period, this image was made from a distant account, so its details of dress and setting are worth reading as the view of an outside observer.
