Frederic Remington's drawing shows the Ghost Dance as it was performed among the Oglala Lakota at Pine Ridge Agency in South Dakota, and it was published in Harper's Weekly on December 6, 1890. Remington worked from sketches he made on the spot, so the scene carries the immediacy of a witnessed event rather than a studio reconstruction. The Ghost Dance was a spiritual movement that promised the return of the dead, the renewal of the land and the removal of white settlers, and it alarmed federal agents and settlers alike. Within weeks of this issue, tensions at Pine Ridge led to the killing of Sitting Bull and, later that month, to the Wounded Knee Massacre.
