Edward S. Curtis made this portrait as part of his multivolume project The North American Indian, and it was published as plate 109 in a supplementary volume. The title "Invocation" and the subject heading on calumets point to a ceremonial moment, with the sacred pipe central to the sitter's prayer. Curtis worked across many Plains and Northwest communities between about 1900 and 1930, often staging figures in traditional dress to evoke a vanished way of life. The image is worth reading as both a record of spiritual practice and a deliberately composed artwork shaped by the photographer's own vision.
