Unlike the group portraits on this board, this picture is identified in its record as a study of Sioux chiefs, and it appeared as plate 79 in the third supplementary volume of Edward S. Curtis's *The North American Indian*. Curtis worked on that multivolume project from 1907 to 1930, photographing Native peoples across the West and recording their dress, ceremonial regalia and daily life. His portraits were often posed and carefully composed, so the clothing and headdresses shown here reflect his choices as much as everyday practice. Viewers today read the image as both a record of Lakota regalia and a product of the early twentieth-century taste for romantic images of Native Americans.
