A young child is the sole subject of this photoprint by Frank B. Fiske, a photographer long associated with Lakota life at Standing Rock in what is now North Dakota. The caption card uses the older umbrella term "Sioux," which covers several related Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota peoples, and its date and the child's identity are not recorded. Fiske worked during a period when many photographers made portraits of Native families that were then circulated as ethnographic images, so viewers today should read the picture with that history in mind.
