Perched on a ridge above Cuzco, Sacsayhuamán is known for its massive limestone blocks, cut and fitted so precisely that the walls stand without mortar. The Inca built the fortress in the 15th century, and in 1536 it became a battleground when Manco Inca led a rebellion against the Spanish who had seized the city. This stereograph, issued by the American Stereoscopic Company in New York around 1907, was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the scene a sense of depth and made distant places feel close to home.
