This print presents the women of Accra, a coastal town in what was then the British Gold Coast, now Ghana. It belongs to the American Colonization Society collection, a group founded in 1816 to resettle free Black Americans in Africa, mainly in what became Liberia. The date, given as between 1895 and 1896, comes from a caption card that was later revised, so it is an estimate to verify. Accra's Ga people had long traded with European merchants along the coast, a history that shaped the town when this photograph was made.
