Looking northwest down a street in the old Korean quarter of Fusan, now Busan, this stereograph shows a port city at the turn of the twentieth century. Its caption lists dwellings, fishing and seaweed, pointing to a waterfront economy built on the sea. Busan had opened to Japanese trade in 1876, and foreign settlers were reshaping parts of the city beside its older Korean neighborhoods. The American firm Underwood & Underwood issued the card, and its stereoviews were sold widely to readers eager for views of distant places.
