The caption names the Native houses at Cruces, a riverside settlement on the Chagres River in what was then the Canal Zone. Cruces had long been a stopping point on the old colonial trail toward Panama City, and by about 1908 it lay in the area where American engineers were building the canal. The print was copyrighted by William J. Ewen of Hammond, Indiana, a commercial photoprint publisher who sold views of the canal and its surroundings to a broad public. The record notes that its details come from an unverified caption card, so the exact identity of the people and houses shown should be read with some caution.
