Census taking at the Standing Rock Agency, which served Lakota and Yanktonai residents of a reservation straddling the North Dakota and South Dakota line, captures a routine but consequential federal task around 1904. Agency officials counted residents to decide who qualified for rations, annuity goods and allotted land. Albertypes like this one, made by a photomechanical process that reproduced photographs in ink, were popular for commercial views in the early 1900s.
