Set beside a railroad line on the Crow reservation, this marble monument honors George Armstrong Custer, the Seventh Cavalry commander killed at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in June 1876. Its location at Crow Agency is the notable detail, since the Crow people had served as scouts for the army and had their own accounts of the battle and its aftermath. The photograph, made around 1894 by H.R. Locke, records a memorial placed in the landscape of a Native nation during a period when the Crow were confined to a reservation and the history of the 1876 fight was being told and retold, often by people outside the Crow community.
