Frederic Remington's engraving shows a wagon train under attack, with riders circling the wagons while the travelers use their horses as shields. Remington built his reputation on scenes like this, drawing for illustrated magazines in the late nineteenth century, when many readers were eager for vivid images of the frontier. The circled wagon was a real defensive formation on the overland trails, and Remington often turned such moments into dramatic set pieces. The caption card gives no date, so the print is best understood within that broader era of Western illustration.
